Hawaiian fish pond

The ancient Hawaiians built this fish pond at Kalaoa in North Kona.  Most tourist never see this beautiful place off by it's self down a nonassuming dirt road.  The wall dividing the fish pond from the ocean is currently being refurbished using the Hawaiian traditional dry stack method.  The project has been going on for 13 years by only a couple of men.  These ponds are historically significant and are considered sacred.  The locals know not to disturb them and ask all to respect the Aina (land) and help to preserve these areas for future generations.  This painting is 11 x 14 Acrylic on canvas... Call 808-987-0735.  $500.

Alii drive at sunset

Alii drive in Kailua Kona is a bustling town full of energy.   There are endless sites to paint and the people are all so friendly.  The evening light glows on this tree turning it beautiful warm shades of orange and brown.  You can feel the aloha in the air, it makes me want to have a rainbow shave ice.  11 x 14 watercolor on 140 lb cold pressed paper.  For purchasing information call 808-987-0735
unframed $500.

David Kalakaua's fish pond

David Kalakaua, the Merry Monarch,  had his summer cabin on this lovely pond.  It burnt down in the 50's but was rebuilt and still stands on the grounds of the Outrigger Hotel in Kailua Kona.  I can only imagine David Kalakaua seeing his own reflection in this pond.  He was the reigning Monarch when the Kingdom was overthrown by the 5 businessmen with the aide of the US marines.  David Kalakaua was known as the Merry Monarch because he loved dance and brought back the Hula that had been banned by the missionaries.  I have spent many a day painting on this sacred site with the Kona Plein Air painters.  11 x 14 acrylic on acrylic paper.  This painting is sold.

Kukio Arch at Kukio Beach in Kailua Kona

I had such a beautiful day at Kukio with the Kona Plein Air group who I paint with frequently.  We get to visit new inspiring locations weekly and this is one of my favorites.  I get to see things that I would never have access to without the plein air group.  The other painters have such positive energy and are all a joy to be with.  In plein air painting the goal is to complete the painting in one session.  It allows a certain freedom to finish it in one session to avoid overworking it. 11x14 painted in watercolor.  This painting is sold.

Honu at Carlsmith Ice Ponds

As I watched this lovely Honu rock  back in forth in the gentle ocean current...dining on limu... I was inspired to paint.  He is a regular at Carlsmith ice ponds and seems to enjoy swimming with the people as much as they enjoy him.  I have named him Walter.  I chose watercolor as my medium to give it sparkle and as a painter I enjoy the way the dark areas lead the viewer through the painting.  The light areas work well to anchor him into the composition.  The original is 11 x 14 painted on 140 lb cold pressed watercolor paper.   For information call 808-987-0735  Beautifully displayed in a tortoise shell frame.   $600.
