David Kalakaua's fish pond
David Kalakaua, the Merry Monarch, had his summer cabin on this lovely pond. It burnt down in the 50's but was rebuilt and still stands on the grounds of the Outrigger Hotel in Kailua Kona. I can only imagine David Kalakaua seeing his own reflection in this pond. He was the reigning Monarch when the Kingdom was overthrown by the 5 businessmen with the aide of the US marines. David Kalakaua was known as the Merry Monarch because he loved dance and brought back the Hula that had been banned by the missionaries. I have spent many a day painting on this sacred site with the Kona Plein Air painters. 11 x 14 acrylic on acrylic paper. This painting is sold.
